Medicare Supplement PLan Rate Increases

Premium rates for Medicare Supplement Plans increase every year due to your age and general rate increases. How much of a premium increase can vary from company to company. In May and June of 2025, we're seeing increases ranging from 15-25%.

Next Steps

After reviewing what you need most out of your insurance plan, the next step will be exploring the options available to you. Below are some possible routes to take when searching for a new plan.

option 1: Explore Other Medicare Supplement Plans (Available Year Round)

Switching to a new Medicare Supplement Plan with a lower premium is a possibility. Medicare Supplement benefits are the same with each and every company. A Plan G with United Healthcare has the same core benefits as a Plan G with Blue Cross. Medical underwriting is required when changing plans, so those with chronic health conditions, upcoming surgeries, or other medical issues may have not be able to switch plans.

Option 2: Chronic Health Special needs Plans or "C-SnPS" (Available Year Round)

People affected by a chronic health condition such as heart disease or diabetes have the option to enroll in a Chronic Special Needs Plan. These Medicare Advantage Plans are designed for those with a chronic health issue and have strong benefits to meet those needs. If and when you're diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes, you're eligible to enroll in a C-SNP.

Option 3: 5-Star Advantage Plans (Available Year Round)

5-Star Medicare Advantage Plans are labeled this because of their Medicare star rating, which is based on plan performance, customer services, and other factors. Medicare members (supplement and advantage) have the option to enroll in a 5-star plan at any point during the year.

Option 4: Medicare Supplement Alternative (Subject to Enrolment Periods)

United Healthcare offers a Medicare Advantage plan that has been built to operate similarly to a Medicare Supplement Plan, featuring no network restrictions, plus prescription drug coverage. Ideal for those on a expensive Medicare Supplement who are unable to change plans due to medical underwriting or other restrictions.

Option 5: Medicare Supplement Plan "N" (Available Year Round)

Plan "N" is similar to Plan "G" with a couple of important changes. For out-patient physicians' visits - there is a copay of $20 and $50 for emergency room visits. There is no coverage for "Excess Charges".
Medical underwriting may be required when changing plans, so those with chronic health conditions, upcoming surgeries, or other medical issues may not be able to switch plans.
