A few words on Medicare Advantage plans from Ye Olde Medicare Agent Dave Trout
As you may know, I started in the insurance business back in 1999 with Mutual of Omaha. I worked hard to learn all and more that I needed to know to provide excellent coverage for my clients. During the last 23 years, we have seen a lot of changes in Medicare and I was on point for all of these.
In 2006, Medicare prescription drug coverage first became available. While complex and incomplete, folks on Medicare had coverage for Rx needs, even with the ‘doughnut hole’ . Since then, Medicare Part D has gotten better and better. So that this year, 2023 insulin copays are capped at $35. Next year 2024, there will be a true out of pocket maximum for RX, which in 2025 will be capped at $2000 annually.
In much the same way, Medicare Advantage Plans have gotten better and better. Even as of only 5 years ago, when I went on Medicare, there were few choices and the benefits were ok, but not great. Then in 2019, we saw the first effective plans: Good networks of doctors, low copays for primary care and specialists, effective Rx coverage and good ‘extras’; dental, vision, hearing. The daily copay for the hospital and medical maximum out of pocket were still high. At Zero premium, beyond your Medicare Part B, this coverage ‘worked’ for many people.
NOW, for 2023, we have very strong and effective plans available. All the same plusses as above, but the lowest Medical maximum out of pocket has fallen into the mid-$2,000 range. And when I compare this coverage to a Medicare supplement plan from the late 2010’s or before, many of the annual premiums are higher than the maximums we now see. When I review the dollars in premium - which my clients must pay – to dollars they may pay if they have a “bad year” – the math can work.
That said, for each of us, we have our unique health issues, preferred doctors, Rx needs, considerations for dental, vision and the like. (See How we work link). If you have a Medicare Supplement and you're over 70 – it's time to shop.
Ok, this was more than “A Few Words”. So I will add this. I came to western NC in 1978, met my wife Jan here, raised our daughter, and now we have two grandkids around the corner. BUT, I am still a Florida Boy at heart. Check out my tan. These new Advantage plans here look like what my buddies have and I sell down there in Tampa, Winter Haven, Sarasota, St.Augustine, Miami... Lot’s of Zero’s and low numbers. Contact us for a review and we’ll see if we can bring you a bit of the Beach & pretty Shells; Palm Trees & Sunshine.
